Ruta Butkute

Ruta Butkute combines sculpture, choreography, and installation in her work, exploring how sculptures can move and perform. With a ceramics background, she focuses on primal material qualities like weight, scale, and gravity. During her Rijksakademie residency (2014–2015), she developed the concept of ‘sculptural performance,’ where objects and space guide movement through basic actions like falling, rising, and jumping. She sees sculpture as born from limits, which allow it to truly perform, creating shapes that are both ambiguous and relatable. Ruta experiments by blending industrial metal with worn ceramics, inviting playful visual and physical interaction.
